Playset Preventive Maintenance Services

Custom Triton / Apollo DIY from Jack's Backyard
Quality backyard wooden playsets are expensive. It's surprising how much money is spent on the original purchase and how little is spent to maintain it. If you spent money on your children's swingset, it's an investment. It will depreciate, however, it will also retain value, provided your family fun center is properly cared for.

Your family playset is outside 365/24/7. During everyday play, it can be subjected to forces similar to a light car crash depending on the weight and momentum forced on it. If you don't inspect and tighten the play system bi-annually, it can be more dangerous than fun. Loose bolts can ream out holes in the post or beams and weaken the entire structure. If you don't protect the wood from the sun and rain it's more likely to splinter. Depending on the type of wood, if you allow the moisture to totally evaporate from the wood, it's more likely to become brittle and lose overall strength.

Extend the life of your family playset with preventive maintenance. A playset in good condition can be re-sold for 25-50% of it's original value.
Our Wooden Playset Preventive Maintenance Process
First day on site and this swingset looks like it's tired.

Step One
Tighten and Inspect

Our maintenance service consist of an inspection to determine if any repairs are necessary and a complete tightening of all components of the play system. Our techs will make you aware of current and potential issues and offer solutions to address those issues.
Re-tightening and inspections every 2-3 months are recommended for all wooden playsets. You don't have to hire us for this preventive maintenance, but it's important that it's done.
Pressure washing can really refresh the look.

Step Two
Pressure Wash and Clean

We then pressure wash the wood to remove oxidized sealants and particulates. This insures maximum penetration of the new sealant and reduces the time spans between re-sealing. Due to shipping regulations, most wood swing set manufacturers pre-seal their systems with water-based sealants that start to break down shortly after being exposed to the elements. Some playset manufacturers even recommend re-applying sealant within the first year.
Finish with a nice colored sealant and it looks like new.

Step Three
Apply Waterseal

We allow the wood to dry for a minimum of 48 hours before applying a fresh custom color blend of oil based sealant. Oil based sealants are made to be more durable and offer greater protection of wood products. The duration of the sealant can be affected by weather conditions and could require multiple applications over the life of the playset. A water based sealant, provided by you, can be used upon request, but it will require more frequent applications over time.

Things to think about before you hire a playset installer

  • Do they have a website? In the 21st century, what real business doesn't?
  • Beware of swingset installers who don't list a phone number or an e-mail address in their ad. Where will they be next month or next year?
  • Believe it or not finding the cheapest deal isn't always the best thing. Beware of installers who don't charge enough. They could be hard up for cash and don't care what happens after they're paid. Playset installation is always a mental challenge and hard work. A professional will know their value.
